Don’t panic, it’s not what you think. No self-development pseudo-sermon here!!! This second sermon is from our gifted student minister Jimmy Pattinson, who hails from New Zealand and preaches by the power of the Holy Spirit. This message was preached just this morning and is a great encouragement and reminder to trust in the Lord for our strength and refuge. It was the message I needed this morning!
May the Lord bless you as you hear his word preached faithfully.
THE ULTIMATE STRESS ELIMINATOR (PSALM 62)
Jimmy Pattinson
PSALM 62
TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF DAVID.
62:1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
3 How long will all of you attack a man
to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
9 Those of low estate are but a breath;
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion;
set no vain hopes on robbery;
if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11 Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
according to his work. (ESV)
Matthew 6:25-34
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
“Stress seems to be the order of the day.”
I didn’t listen to most of Mr. Pattinson’s sermon. What I heard was excellent.
The verse you have quoted from Matthew, NP, is one that has gotten me through many difficult times.
In fact, I think of it or share it with someone almost daily.
Stress is, indeed, the order of the day. Unless we look to passages like the ones here we will continue to worry and fret.
Hope you are having a great weekend, NP.
God’s blessings…
BTW…I have a Christian friend in NZ. You gotta love that “accent.” 🙂

Glad you could listen to some of the message. Amazing, particularly from a student minister. Rick Warren (oh, and this list could go on and on and on) could sure learn a thing or two from our Jimmy. Love the Kiwi accent too. I have been to NZ three times…it is wonderful!
I have to say, until a year ago it was all words to me…the ‘do not be anxious/worried’ passages. Now I have experienced the Lord’s peace, I finally get what he was saying in Matthew and well, everywhere else in the Bible about not fearing or worrying. I also (finally!!!) realize that we do this in His strength, not our own. Praise God, he helps us through these challenging times! I agree with you to though, we have to look to God’s word regularly as we can so quickly forget.
As for my weekend, it was wonderfully productive thanks (including two great sermons at the two congregations I attend at my church, and family dinner night with one congregation!). I have spent a week spring cleaning and finished up today. We are on school holidays, so it is wonderful to have an orderly house going into the last term of our school year. Then summer holidays…hooray! We have awesome beaches here in Australia, so am looking forward to sand, surf and sunburn! I also finally set up a proper space for our part-time homeschooling. So, yes, it was great. Hope you had a refreshing time too. God bless you, Chris!
